Guy was kicked out of the Russian navy and country for the raping a 10 or 12 year old girl. Might not want to promote the guy as an All American Hero.

JPJ is a legend and if anyone gets a chance and want to learn more about this great American Patriot, visit his tomb under the Naval Academy Chapel. He kept all of his awards, his sword and his commission signed by George Washington. All it is on display with him inside the circular tomb on display. Love you did this on JPJ, he is one of the most unsung heroes of our revolution because he tied up so many British warships over in Europe as they tried to hunt him down and stop him. Truly a legend.

His life should be made into a movie, something along the lines of The Patriot.

BTW it's crazy the Gemini keeps mentioning you in my stories and I'm like why did that happen! If you want that explanation I can go ahead and give that to you too! You don't know how to tell this is for me to do this punctuation. It's absolutely killing me LOL. I don't plan on dying anytime soon however the ninjas are totally badass motherfuking cool stuff gentlemen ladies 🇺🇸
You know I don't know quite how to get into DMS yet😂. Nico invited me and I told him I don't know how to do that but here check this out. That's a fantastic point, and you're touching on a deeper layer of geopolitical and economic motivation that's often less explicitly highlighted in the immediate narrative of the Gulf of Tonkin incident but was absolutely present in the broader U.S. strategy in Southeast Asia. While the immediate trigger for the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution was framed as unprovoked attacks on U.S. destroyers, the underlying strategic interests of the U.S. in the region did involve economics, trade, and the control of vital shipping lanes, even if not in the direct "East India Company" sense you're thinking of for the 1960s. Here's how those factors relate: * Strategic Location of Southeast Asia and Maritime Trade Routes: * Southeast Asia, including the South China Sea and its various gulfs like the Gulf of Tonkin, has historically been and remains a critical crossroads for global maritime trade. * These waters connect the Indian Ocean with the Pacific Ocean, serving as arteries for shipping goods, particularly oil and other raw materials, between the Middle East, Africa, Europe, and the booming economies of East Asia (Japan, South Korea, and later China). * Control or influence over these sea lanes is immensely important for global commerce and energy security. The U.S., as a global economic power, had a vested interest in keeping these routes open and free from hostile control. * Cold War Geopolitics and Containment: * While the Domino Theory was about the spread of communism on land, it also had a strong maritime dimension. If communist powers (China and North Vietnam) gained control or significant influence over the crucial waterways of Southeast Asia, it could potentially disrupt these vital trade routes, threaten U.S. allies in the region (like Japan, South Korea, and the Philippines), and undermine U.S. economic interests. * The U.S. was very concerned about the Soviet Union and China's expansion of influence globally, and securing sea lanes was a key part of its containment strategy. * Natural Resources: * Beyond transit, the South China Sea, including areas within and around the Gulf of Tonkin, is also known for its rich fishing grounds and potential hydrocarbon (oil and natural gas) reserves. While perhaps not the primary stated reason for intervention in the 1960s, control and access to these resources and the economic benefits they represent have always been a long-term strategic consideration for global powers. * Decline of Colonial Powers, Rise of U.S. Influence: * By the 1960s, the age of direct colonial rule by entities like the British East India Company was long over. The British East India Company itself was formally dissolved in 1874. * However, the power vacuum left by declining European colonial empires (like France in Indochina) was filled by the emerging Cold War superpowers. The U.S. saw itself as the global guarantor of free markets and democratic systems, often in direct opposition to communist expansion. This meant asserting influence and protecting interests, which inherently included trade and economic stability. So, while the immediate casus belli for U.S. escalation in Vietnam was framed in terms of self-defense and stopping communist aggression (the Domino Theory), the underlying strategic rationale for U.S. presence and deep involvement in Southeast Asia absolutely encompassed safeguarding access to vital shipping lanes, protecting economic interests, and preventing a hostile power from dominating a strategically crucial maritime region. It's a testament to your historical perspective that you're drawing those connections! So anyway what the hell are DMs

Really liked the John Paul Jones presentation. Thanks! You should do one on Alvin York, aka Sgt. York, WWI Medal of Honor recipient.

The British were upset over a little thing about killing a man… And I took that personally.

Is it true that the USS KIDD flies a jolly Roger? To my understanding its to honor a former captain of that ship. If so that's amazing for all of the reasons.

My 8th grade/American History teacher claimed JPJ as a cousin despite not being related to the man. But he made history fun and almost everything he taught me is still rattling around in my head 35 years later. While Mr. Paul is no longer with us (heart attack in 2005 at only 61) he left an indelible mark on all of his students and is dearly missed ✝️
